Every placement I've had has given me the opportunity to explore the field of Child and youth work. Each placement has been very different each with its own challenges and accomplishments. I feel that placement along with schooling has prepared me for the field, changed my perspective, and helped me utilize my own qualities.
I feel I have really developed my own sense of style when working with clients. I feel I naturally come off as very approachable and non-threatening to clients, because I am soft spoken, genuine, and caring. I feel from my past I have developed a good work ethic, and this shows in the dedication and professionalism I demonstrate at placement.
Through my placements I feel I have been able to excel in the different settings, but each one had similar but very different challenges.
At my first placement I feel I was able to get of a feel of what it was like to start working with clients and begin building relationships. I think that this placement helped me develop my interpersonal skills to build relationships with clients. I was able to build a relationship with the whole class and they were very emotional when I done placement. I was able to work one to one with a client and use a reward sticker system as incentive to help
My second placement felt like everyday I could expect the unexpected. This placement helped to develop my clinical skills. Through the use of communication books, logs, abc charts, and data collection during programs I was able to get a better understanding of behaviour. I was also introduced to the application of theories such as compliance training, aba, and behaviour modification. I very much enjoyed working with children with Autism and I feel that this placement led me to want to have a career working with children with exceptionalities as I found it so rewarding. I was able to go on my first home visit as well as write a TPR with my supervisor.
My third placement has given me the opportunity to solidify previously gained skills. Though I had a delay in my placement I feel that my progress regressed, but through staff support I was able to gain the confidence I had lost back and excel. I feel this placement has given me a stronger sense of who I am and what I have to offer clients. I had previously struggled with being assertive in situations when needed. In my previous placement I struggled with holding a child's hands when he would aggress towards me. I found it difficult when the child seemed distressed and I still had to maintain that hold. I feel this placement has helped me reach my common goal of becoming more assertive, and has given me the ability to manage a group without staff support.
